His slideshow explores the intersection of "high art" literature and "low art" comic strips as seen in the works by cartoonists who have adapted classic novels and plays. Sikoryak (whose own work includes adaptations of Dostoyevsky and Emily Bronte) discusses the history of these reinterpretations with images from over ninety years of comic strips, comic books, and graphic novels.

Katherine Anne Porter: A Driving Desire, with Pennlyn White

"I never started out with anything in this world but a kind of passion, a driving desire." Her flawless pen and harsh criticism of not only her times, but of human society, made Katharine Anne Porter a major voice in twentieth century American literature. When Porter left her home state of Texas for New York City, she brought with her the hard edge of a Western pioneer. It was this edge more than anything that made her name as a writer. In a tribute to Porter’s life, work and legacy, actress Pennylyn White brings to life the woman behind the myth in a probing performance using extracts of Porter’s body of work, including her personal letters. Special thanks to the Jane Hope Hastings Philanthropic Trust.

All questions will be answered. All audience members who buy a copy of Master of Ceremonies will receive a free consultation with the author.

2:00 PM

The Future of Independent Publishing

As new technologies once again turn the publishing world on its ear, small presses are surviving--and thriving--by embracing alternative publishing models, from limited editions that treat books as collectable objects to innovative multi-media that make digital books more fluid, interactive and open source. In a conversation led by Buzz Poole (Managing Editor, Mark Batty Publisher), Alex Rose (Publisher, Hotel St. George Press), Ben Greenman (Editor, The New Yorker), Matvei Yankelevich (Founding Editor, Ugly Duckling Presse), and Dan Visel (Future of the Book) discuss how to maintain the dynamic relationship between publisher, author and reader in the digital age, and how to create books that reflect and respond to our interactive cultural landscape.
