The New York Center for Independent Publishing
New Independent Press Devoted to Exploring Contemporary African-American Issues
A new independent press devoted to contemporary African-American issues has been founded by novelist Tina McElroy Ansa. While still developing relationships with distributors and editors, DownSouth Press intends to publish about twelve books a year, with each book list being headed by one established author. Although actively searching for new voices with the intention of debuting beginning writers to the literary world, the publisher will only accept agented manuscripts after July 1st. Ansa founded the press to create a space for serious African-American literary fiction that has often been neglected by mainstream publishers in favor of lower quality and more popular genres. The first list of books, headed by Ansa's own novel Taking After Murder, will be available in the fall. For more information on DownSouth press, visit their website at www.downsouthpress.com .
